Eternal Transformation, 2022

We are living in an ever-changing world. While technology and the Internet are changing our life, revolutionary works are constantly appearing in the field of art. However, many excellent traditional arts have also begun to fade away. How to develop and continue traditional art and culture has become one of the main topics for people.

When I traveled to Sichuan, China several years ago, I was deeply impressed by the local art of Bian Lian(Face-changing 變臉). It is prominent as a Chinese art form for the last 300 years. Today, as it continues to evolve and innovate with technology, the Bian Lian performance has become more expressive.

Sichuan Opera Masks as the main tool in Bian Lian. I choose it as the subject matter and combine using realistic painting techniques to express stability (cultural inheritance) and abstract painting techniques to express transformation(new forms for traditional art), presenting a harmonious transitional picture. Red, black, and white as the color palette, and it is combined with various brushwork to provide my audience with an eye-pleasing journey.

The appearance of new things does not mean that traditional things will be replaced. In contrast, they can be harmoniously blended together and create unique forms. It is a kind of life philosophy that extends to our studies, works, or businesses. Tradition and innovation will be the most powerful combination. Ever-changing is eternal.
